The New Structure is a series that invites the community to share experiences relating to historical, urban, and design topics. For this special DWP 2014 event, architect Carrie Strickland, former Portland mayor Sam Adams, and architect Rick Potestio will engage in a multimedia, storytelling session; sharing their personal journeys into and around fields of design and influence.

Carrie Strickland is a principal (with Bill Neburka) of Works Partnership Architecture, a progressive architectural design studio based in Portland, OR founded in 2005. She earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the College of Design, Architecture, Art + Planning at the University of Cincinnati and is a registered architect in Oregon, Washington, California, Montana, and Ohio. She has built an extensive background in adaptive re-use and speculative development while advocating for design as the basis for urban interventions. Carrie has served as visiting professor at Portland State University and the University of Oregon. She regularly serves on forums and lecture panels discussing design in the Pacific Northwest; has served on the board of directors for the AIA Portland chapter; was chair of the City of Portland’s Development Review Advisory Committee; and is a co-founder of Cityscope, a non-profit platform with a focus on multi-discipline urban fabric and design.

 

Rick Potestio is the principal of Potestio Studio, based in Portland, OR. For more than twenty years, Rick has developed designs ranging from residences and multi-family projects to schools and health care facilities with the goal of serving the needs of both client and society. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Oregon and a Master of Architecture from Syracuse University. For eight years he worked in Boston and New York, lived and studied abroad in Florence, Italy for a year and a half. Upon his return to Portland in 1989, Rick was project architect at THA until he founded Potestio Studio in 1992. Rick was adjunct professor and studio critic at University of Oregon, and his work and designs have been lauded by the AIA Regional awards, PDX Design awards, ShowPDX, and exhibited at PNCA.

 

Until 2013, Sam Adams was the Mayor of Portland, Oregon. Prior to being elected Mayor, Sam served a four-year term as City Commissioner and 11 years as Chief of Staff to Portland Mayor Vera Katz. His earlier public service includes work as the Political Director of the Oregon House Democrats and as an aide to Oregon Congressmen Peter DeFazio. Sam’s non-profit service includes: All Hands Raised (Co-founder), Greater Portland, Inc. (Co-founder), Creative Advocacy Network (Co-founder), Oregon Art PAC (Co-founder), Portland Sustainability Institute (Co-founder).
